Revolting Women

Funny, fierce and unapologetically honest, Revolting Women gives a voice to women over 50 who have spent a lifetime being heard — but not always listened to.

Written by two sisters, Lucy Ryan and Sarah McNeill, the show is inspired by groundbreaking doctoral research and the bestselling, award-winning book Revolting Women.

Drawing on the real stories and experiences of women over 50, this powerful and entertaining production explores the frustrations, contradictions, courage and quiet rebellions of women navigating the second half of their lives.

Blending sharp humour, poignant storytelling and original music, Revolting Women challenges the stereotypes of ageing and asks what happens when women decide they've had enough of playing by the rules.

Provocative, moving and often laugh-out-loud funny, this is a celebration of women finding their voices, reclaiming their power and refusing to become invisible.

Born from doctoral research and a bestselling book, and brought to life by two sisters, this production transforms real women's experiences into theatre that is funny, moving, provocative and occasionally outrageous.

The Fringe feels like the perfect home for a show that challenges convention, confronts ageism and celebrates women who are no longer prepared to be invisible. We want to reach new and diverse audiences, spark conversations across generations, and challenge assumptions about what it means to grow older as a woman.

Above all, we want audiences to leave entertained, energised and perhaps just a little more rebellious than when they arrived.

We would love to bring Revolting Women to Bedlam Fringe because it feels like exactly the right home for a bold, funny and thought-provoking piece of theatre that challenges convention.

Written by two sisters, inspired by doctoral research and a bestselling, award-winning book, Revolting Women brings the often unheard voices of women over 50 to the stage.

Bedlam's intimate, atmospheric setting particularly appeals to us. We want audiences to feel close to the characters, to laugh, to recognise themselves and perhaps to question some of their assumptions about women and ageing.

We also love the idea of bringing a show about rebellion to a venue with such a distinctive, independent spirit.

Above all, we want to create theatre that entertains, provokes conversation and celebrates the fact that women don't become less interesting, ambitious or rebellious as they get older. Quite the opposite.

Review by Christina Patterson

“It’s hard to disagree with anything in this book. It’s clear. It’s pithy. It’s enraging.”
